As part of the settlement, Spark will also have to pay $9,000 each to Aaron Werner and Richard Wright, the two gay men who sued the company, as well as $450,000 in attorneys’ fees.
A California judge ruled the site’s original format violated the state’s Unruh Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation.
“Spark has engaged in a systemic and intentional pattern and practice of arbritrary discrimination against gays and lesbians throughout California by denying them full and equal services, accomodations, advantages and privileges in connection with many of its commercial dating services,” the lawsuit filed in 2013 said.
Spark refuses to admit any wrongdoing, as part of the settlement.
The company’s first website, JDate.com, an online Jewish dating service, already has features that allow gay and lesbian users to find matches.
“I am gratified that we were able to work with Spark to help ensure that people can fully participate in all the diverse market places that make our country so special, regardless of their sexual orientation,” Vineet Dubey, one of the plaintiff’s attorneys, said in a statement to the Journal.
