All the gays flock to Miami, New York, Atlanta, and other big cities for gay pride festivities. But, when was the last time you gave money to local LGBT organizations that support HIV testing, taking in homeless gay youth, and fight for the rights of our own people?
Every year the National LGBT Movement Report by Movement Advancement Project examines financial documents from over 30 LGBT organizations – GLAAD, GLSEN, The Trevor Project, etc. – and releases their findings. Even as all of the organizations reported a combined expense budget of $165.6 million, a 10% increase from last year’s number, there is still a problem as less than 3 percent of the American LGBT population giving donations. Our top 10 anti-gay foes spend three times as much as all the LGBT advocacy groups in the analysis combined.
Imagine the power of our movement if 30 percent of the community donated to American Civil Liberties Union or American Foundation for Equal Rights who are fighting hard in the Supreme Court to over turn marriage bans. Imagine the power of our movement if we donated clothes, food, and/or our expertise to the 200 local LGBT community centers in our neighborhoods.
What do you think of the findings?
